When the puppies are born, they have natural instincts that include eating, sleeping, and staying warm. They will often curl up into a ball and sleep all piled-on top of each other, so they stay warm. Of course, the mother dog helps keep them warm by cuddling with them. She also plays an important role with the babies by cleaning them and feeding them. Puppies need the nurturing their mothers provide as part of their development. For the first two weeks the puppies follow the same pattern of eating and sleeping. They need a lot of sleep to help with their growth and development.
Between the age of two and three weeks the puppies start to open their eyes and move around more. At this stage they are also trying to stand and walk. They start to explore their space and play with one another. This is when their personalities start to develop. The funny part is when they make noise like a little growl, and they look at each other in shock wondering who made the noise. We handle them every day from birth, so they don’t know any difference but as they grow, they want more handling and attention.
Between the age of three and four weeks, they start trying to eat solid food. By four weeks of age, they start to play with small toys and wrestle with one another. They love to give kisses and their tails do not stop wagging when they see their humans. All the puppies have their own little differences in personality, but all these puppies have sweet, loving personalities.
By the time they are six weeks old, they enjoy playing and learning how toys work. They are learning where the boundaries are and what is expected of them. A puppy’s personality develops further as they transition into their new homes. Puppies that go into a home with children for example, will develop a personality that works with the children. This puppy will be more playful, active, and ready for the next adventure with the children. On the other hand, if I took that same puppy and placed it with a senior who was not active, the puppy would be quiet and laid back. The puppy would not have the expectation of running around and playing. Instead, the puppy will enjoy being a companion and sit right by them on the couch watching the afternoon shows. These puppies adapt to any lifestyle whether active, somewhat active, or not active. They learn what their new family enjoys and adapt to each family member.
Personality develops over the first several months of life. The personality can change from different factors such as environment. It is important for a puppy to have boundaries and love; this helps them develop a good personality and not form any bad traits. Puppies are a lot like children, they look for the boundaries and aim to please once they understand those boundaries.
